XIANGQI PIECE NAMES AND NOTATION Asian Xiangqi Federation, by former Chairman of Study Commission Mr.
C.W.Huang, established in 1980/82 the following notation system. The piece
names were revised by AXF in 1995 and adopted by WXF in 1997. Piece Names
Movements
Tandem Positions
The digit denoting the file
position of the tandem pieces is replaced by + for front piece, and – for
rear piece. Example: 車前平三 R+.3 炮後退一 C--1 Special Cases for
Tandem Pawns (I) 3 Pawns in a file (a) the second digit of
the front pawn denoted by + (b) the second digit of
the rear pawn denoted by - (c) the mid-pawn is
neither “front” nor “rear”. Therefore it can be denoted by normal notation. Example: 3
tandem pawns at 3rd file to traverse to 4th file P+.4 for
front pawn P3.4 for
mid pawn P-.4 for
rear pawn (II) 5 Pawns in a file (a) for the foremost
pawn, the first-digit is denoted by + (b) for the rearmost
pawn, the first-digit is denoted by - (c) for the middle 3
pawns, they are denoted same as (I) above. Example: 5
tandem pawns at 3rd file to traverse to 4th file ++.4 for
foremost pawn P+.4 for
second foremost pawn P3.4 for
mid pawn P-.4 for
second rearmost pawn --.4 for
rearmost pawn (III) 4 Pawns in a file No
pawn in the middle, and they can be denoted same as (II) but without the
mid-pawn. Example: 4

first digit denotes the file of the pawn to move. Example: 3 tandem pawns at 3rd file and 2 at

3rd file mid-pawn to traverse to 4th file 3-.4 for
3rd file rear pawn to traverse to 4th file 7+.6 for
